Becoming Catholic

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a formation process for individuals who are interested in becoming Catholic. This could be people over the age of 7 who have never been baptized or it could be people who were baptized in another church and may now want to become Catholic. A period of "inquiry" or questioning is the first step in the formation process. The inquiry phase provides an opportunity to ask questions about what it means to be a member of the Catholic Church. It is a time for people to consider how the Catholic faith can renew and strengthen their spiritual lives. After this time of inquiry those who have never been baptized become catechumens and enter a process of formation of a year or more.  They are usually welcomed into the Church at the Easter Vigil.

Those who are already baptized in another church become candidates and enter a process of formation appropriate for them.  They are welcomed into the church at various times throughout the year by making a profession of faith, being confirmed, and sharing at the Lord's Table.

In addition to welcoming new people into the Catholic faith, RCIA reminds each member of the parish community that the journey of faith is lifelong. When we share our life experiences with each other, we learn more about our faith,
we grow in our faith and we become a more faithful people.
