Leads the congregation in song, solo or in a small ensemble. Because the cantor is expected to lead the congregation effectively in singing, s/he will need to meet with the music Director for an evaluation of skills, such as: possess a strong, clear, welcoming voice; they need to be able to not only read music and carry a tune, but also to lead the congregation musically, teach new songs and be confident of their own singing ability. Good sight-reading ability or ability to independently prepare musical selections is a must. Must be a team player, and have a strong familiarity with Roman Catholic liturgy. Arrive early for Mass and be committed to the frequency and time you volunteer for and arrange for a substitute if you can’t make it. Since this is a central worship role, it’s very inconvenient for the priest, accompanist and congregation if you’re a “no-call-no-show.” Occasionally, a cantor may sing at weddings or funerals.
